The Brown Scapular Booklet
The Blessed Mother promised, "Whosever dies
wearing this scapular shall not suffer eternal
fire. It shall be a sign of peace and a
safeguard in times of danger."
Wearing the scapular draws us closer to Mary and
brings us special graces through her
intercession. It indicates that we wish to
obtain and model the virtues which Our Lady had.
One must be enrolled in the wearing of the
brown scapular to obtain the promises associated
with it. The Confraternity of Penitents
enrolls members each year in the brown scapular
at its annual retreat. However, any priest
may conduct the enrollment. The rite of
enrollment is on this
link.
Pope Paul VI said in 1965: " ...Ever hold in
great esteem the practices and exercises of the
devotion to the Most Blessed Virgin which have
been recommended for centuries by the
magisterium of the Church. And among them we
judge well to recall especially the Marian
rosary and the religious use of the Scapular of
Mt. Carmel."
This small, full color booklet (3" x 5")
contains much information on the scapular in a
readable, to the point format. It's a good
way to introduce folks to this sacramental as it
contains a brief history of the Carmelite Order,
the background of the brown scapular, and the
promises attached to wearing it. The
importance of the scapular in the lives of a few
saints and popes as well as how it changed the
lives of some lay people are included as well as
a Novena to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and a few
Marian prayers.
The booklet notes that people are to be
enrolled in the Scapular before wearing it and
clearly states "The Scapular is not a magic
charm, nor an automatic guarantee of salvation.
It is, rather, a sign approved by the Church for
over seven centuries. The Scapular stands
for the decision to follow Jesus, like Mary open
to God and His Will, guided by faith, hope, and
charity: close to the needs of all people,
especially the poor and the outcast, praying at
all times, and discovering God's presence in all
that happens around and in us."
The booklet is well worth its small cost.
