Published by the Confraternity
of the Precious Blood, 1964
The Confraternity of Penitents has received a
small, limited supply of this out-of-print book.
This small book offers a series of reflections
on the Liturgy as well as Scriptural vigils
meant to be used as prayer services with leader
and laity present. These incorporate Scripture
and prayer.
Reverend Peter Chiara, who has edited this
book, begins with a discussion of the liturgy,
its importance, and its meaning. Using documents
of the Second Vatican Council (which had just
concluded), Father Peter explores the
relationship which the believer should have with
Christ, including obedience to the Lord and love
of Him. He discusses the mystical Body of Christ
as well as the Eucharist, the priesthood of all
believers as well as the ministerial priesthood,
the Mass as a Divine Banquet where Christ is the
Bread of our lives whom we share. The tone of
these reflections are consistent with the true
meaning of Vatican II and avoid the distortions
that crept into the Church in later years.
Father Peter then discusses a few major
feasts of the Church and what spiritual gifts we
might hope to gain from them. Saints Peter and
Paul teach us about the Church, for example, St.
John the Baptist about witnessing to the Lord,
and St. Joseph about our role as workers for the
Lord.
The book contains a section on the sacraments
with an explanation of each, again using
documents from Vatican II as the source of the
narrative.
The Bible vigils are beautifully arranged
with a prayer, reading from Scripture, and
antiphonal meditation written to be shared in a
group setting.
